For those interested, here’s a very hasty analysis of how the titles of this year’s long and short accepted papers differ.

Hi Jason, this is awesome. Thanks for doing it in short order! You can now do it for the TACL articles to be presented at ACL too! I’ll be in touch…

Thanks a lot!
I just updated the notebook to include a comparison of the TACL articles listed vs. long papers.
One interesting finding as that while “generation” was used frequently in long papers’ titles, no TACL paper had the word in its title.
Given the gripes about ACs authoring a lot of papers (53 by my count), I also compared the titles of papers by area chairs to average Joes. The results were interesting. ACs tended to use more straightforward, marketing-type language in their titles. “Fast and accurate”, “evidence”, and “new”.
Average Joes frequently had the word “Chinese” in their titles, but not one AC use the term in a title.
Take a look at the visualization for more details.

So many papers authored by ACs!

Yea, some ACs have 4+ papers in their area.

Indeed it is quite disturbing

Very indeed it is.

But doesn’t it make sense? AC’s are usually distinguished researchers in their field and as such they get more papers accepted than others.

it is bias when ACs make final recommendations from a list containing their own papers.

I think one should establish a clear and credible evidence before questioning the integrity of any researcher. Of course area chairs publish a lot of papers! They are typically pretty good researchers and that’s why they were selected as area chairs!
Fortunately, there’s an easy way to account for this by looking at the number of ACL’17 papers co-authored by area chairs of previous ACL conferences. By my counting, area chairs of ACL’16 averaged 1.00 ACL’17 papers (38 ACL’17 papers / 38 ACL’16 area chairs). In contrast, area chairs of ACL’17 averaged 0.92 ACL’17 papers (56 ACL’17 papers / 61 ACL’17 area chairs). On average, area chairs of ACL’16 published more in ACL’17 than did area chairs of ACL’17 in ACL’17.

“questioning the integrity of any researcher”. I think no one does this. But the question regarding bias must be allowed. I also do not understand your argument in the second part. It is to me like, “today the weather is bad, but yesterday it was worse, so the weather must be good today”…

Hi ABC,
Please read my comment again. Your analogy would hold if I compared the publication rate of ACL’16 ACs in ACL’16 to that of ACL’17 in ACL’17, but I did not.
How do you suggest we study the potential bias?

It seems that for many areas the acceptance rates are above 30%, such as 36% for Dialog Interactive Systems, while for some areas the rates are only 20%, such as sentiment analysis. If it is possible, could you explain the selecting strategy for each area? Thanks.

Hi Eric, thanks for your comment. Yes, we will be post-digesting the acceptance/rejection rates overall soon. We definitely want everyone to have a clear understanding of how we took on this process; whether you agree with our decisions of course is up to you.
Smaller areas did correlate to have higher acceptance rates and more cross disciplinary work. We’ll be breaking down the stats in the follow up post on this topic. Let us know if there’s specific questions you want answered.

Hi Program Chairs, my paper was accepted however we need a slight rearrangement of the author list (we are not adding or excluding any new authors other than a rearrangement.) We are also planning to update this in camera-ready copy.
Is there any other action we need to perform. ?

Dear Professor Min,
I think it is a good idea to ask the area chairs to rank the top 5 papers in each area based on the recommendation scores.

Dear chairs,
I’m not sure if I should post this here in your blog or elsewhere (I’m not going to be in Vancouver, so I can’t raise it at the business meeting).
I recently subscribed to the arXiv daily digest, and I find their format very practical to get a quick view of what’s going on. I’d like to suggest that ACL conferences and journals send their list of accepted papers, *together with abstracts and links to the pdfs*, to the ACL members. It’s a very practical way to skim through what has been accepted (titles), get the general idea (abstract), and delve deeper if necessary (pdf). I think that this would increase the visibility of the papers in our venues, and conversely help researchers in the community keep track of the literature.
Of course, there should be a way to opt out of this service, but this should not be too difficult to implement, since there is already a “My Events/Journals Alerts” option in the ACL user page.
Best regards,
Gemma.
